Homeschool to the Rescue
The problem of accessible, affordable secondary school on a remote island

Parents living abroad with their children face unique problems when it comes to accessible, high-quality, affordable education.
Often times, international schools provide the only high-quality education to foreign parents.
These schools can be far away, expensive, and exclusionary.
Many parents have to make difficult decisions about where their children will attend school. Parents schooling their children outside their home countries are increasingly turning to homeschool as an economical and convenient alternative to traditional school.
On one remote island in East Africa, two families came together to create a hybrid home-school experience: a blend of online, structured learning, and hands-on, experiential, project-based learning.

The boys had the unique experience of falling in love with learning on an island.
They trekked through the capital city with only coordinates and photo clues, in search of hidden treasure.

They built sailboats.
They learned about our earth, time travel, and the wonders of the solar system.

They learned geometry…with a little help from the billiard table.
They learned about Greek Gods through Percy Jackson.

They learned about entomology by catching and taxonomizing species around them.
They learned about global warming, and its impact on humans and animals, alike. They learned about how to do their part.

They visited an underwater sponge farm to learn about sustainable fishing and permaculture.
They learned French.

They learned how to play chess, and had the extraordinary opportunity to learn from and duel the world’s first Black Chess Grandmaster.
But most of all, they learned about friendship.
